There are a lot of different types of leadership, each consisting of pros and cons. Since companies and people are different, there is no correct type of leadership; it all depends on the leader and company goals and culture.
Different situations call for different leaderships styles, as well as dealing with different personality types within a company. There are a wide variety of styles out there, but here are a few of the most popular leadership styles:
- Laissez-faire, or ‘hands off’ leadership is when the leader doesn’t give much direction or feedback to its employees. This makes it less stressful for those who work well independently, but can also result in chaos when something gets off track.
- When managers make decisions completely on their own with no help from others, it is called an autocratic leadership style. This can be helpful for those employees who have no input on what is going on within their company and can also be more time efficient as it limits opinions. On the other hand, this type of leadership can hinder employees who do or want to have a say and can never get their voice heard.
- Also known as the ‘democratic style’, participative leadership asks for and considers the input of team members, though at the end of the day the leader has the ultimate say. This is a great way to give employees a feeling of worth and value while maintaining the respect of a single leader. Issues can arise when a decision is made that contradicts employees’ wishes.
- This type of leadership style is when a manager sets goals for his or her employees and then rewards or punishes them if the goal is met or not. On one hand, it makes the tasks straightforward with the possibility of great rewards. On the other hand, it limits employee flexibility, and harsh punishment can result in low employee morale.
- With ongoing communication and efficiency, transformational leadership is when a manager helps an employee with their tasks, giving constant feedback and assistance when needed. The purpose of this leadership style is to create great employees with confidence, but at times can be overbearing for some.
